Accessibility
We want this site to work for everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard only, a magnifier, or a phone in bright sunlight.
Standard
The site is designed against WCAG 2.2, level AA. We do not claim full conformance until it has been tested on real devices.
What has been done
- Text and interface colours were checked for contrast in both light and dark modes, and the site follows your device's setting.
- Buttons and navigation links are at least 44 by 44 pixels on a phone. Body text is 16 pixels.
- Pages are server-rendered HTML and work without JavaScript; script adds the map and the search suggestions on the search page.
- The search field suggests matches as you type, each saying what it is. The arrow keys move through them, Enter chooses one, and Escape or Cancel brings the results back. Moving through the page with Tab does not open the suggestions. The filters open over the page and close with Escape.
- The only movement is the map drawer sliding between its positions and the small arrow beside a shop's opening hours turning, and none at all if your device asks for reduced motion.
- Meaning never rests on colour alone: whether a shop is open is written in words, and on a shop's page the age of its menu is given as a date.
- Every page has a skip link, one main heading and a clear heading order.
Known gaps
- Keyboard, screen-reader, zoom and forced-colour testing on real devices has not yet been carried out. The findings will be listed here.
- The map has not been tested with a screen reader. On it, every shop is a button with its name, whether it is open and its distance, and the drawer's handle is a button too, so no dragging is needed. The list carries everything the map shows, and each card's Map button finds the shop on the map, including where two shops a few metres apart overlap.
- Photographs of shops, when we have them, may come without descriptive text; where we have none, the photograph is marked as decorative.
Wheelchair access at the shops
Each shop's page says what is known about four parts of the shop: the entrance, the counter where you buy, the seating and the toilet. Each is step-free, has stairs, or is not recorded yet. Not recorded means we do not know, not that it is inaccessible. Tap the Wheelchair box on a shop's page to see each part, any note, and where and when it was recorded: checked in person, or from OpenStreetMap.
The Wheelchair filter on the search page lists the shops whose entrance and counter are both step-free, so you can get in and buy. It also says how many more shops would match but have not been recorded yet.
